When to Consider a Diagnostic Evaluation

Understanding your child’s development can be both exciting and overwhelming. While every child develops at their own pace, there are certain signs that may indicate the need for a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. These include delays in language or communication, limited eye contact, difficulty with social interactions, repetitive movements, intense reactions to sounds or textures, or trouble with changes in routine.

A diagnostic evaluation is a structured process that helps determine whether a child meets the criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or another developmental condition. It typically involves input from caregivers, direct observation, and standardized tools. The goal is not just to confirm a diagnosis, but to better understand your child’s strengths and needs so that informed, effective supports can be put in place.

It’s important to remember that seeking an evaluation doesn’t mean something is “wrong”—it’s simply a way to gather information and plan for your child’s future. Early identification can lead to earlier access to services like speech therapy, occupational therapy, and ABA therapy, which are most effective when started early.
