At What Age Can Autism Be Diagnosed, and When Should I Seek an Evaluation?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can often be identified earlier than many parents realize. While every child develops at their own pace, signs of autism can sometimes be observed as early as 12 to 18 months. These signs may include delayed speech, limited eye contact, lack of gestures like pointing or waving, and repetitive behaviors.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends autism-specific screenings at 18 and 24 months, but if you notice developmental differences at any age, it’s okay—and important—to seek an evaluation. Trust your instincts. You know your child better than anyone. If your pediatrician doesn’t share your concerns, don’t be afraid to advocate for your child and seek a second opinion. Many families find that pushing for answers is what ultimately leads them to the support their child needs.

Early identification opens the door to early intervention services like ABA therapy, which are most effective when started young. If something doesn’t feel right, reach out. A diagnostic evaluation can offer clarity, direction, and hope.
